Sorghum Farming To Boost

Dairy, Cattle, Goat Industry

The re-introduction of Sorghum farming in Central Mindanao, Samar and Pangasinan will not only provide feed millers with a low-priced and protein-rich grains but also open up new farming activities including Dairy production, Cattle Fattening and Goat Raising.

Sorghum is a unique grains producing African grass which could regrow, also known as Ratooning, when the stalks are chipped to ground level after harvest, thus allowing the farmer three harvests with just one seeding.

Another beneficial characteristic of Sorghum is the retention of green leaves and stalks even at harvest time making it an ideal forage for silage making.

Sorghum silage has an estimated protein content of at least 4.5% and 17.1% starch which when fortified with other micro minerals will make it an outstanding feed material for Dairy Cattle, Steers for fattening and Goats.

In previous studies we conducted in our Sorghum trial farms, one hectare of Sorghum could produce at least 40-metric tons of silage which according to Cattle Fattening expert Arnel Corpuz would be enough to feed 20 heads for one year.

This year, we are scheduled to plant at least 2,000 hectares in Central Mindanao with simultaneous launching of trial farms in Pangasinan and Samar.
